BCHA/1820s: ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION The 1820 Settlers Association of South Africa is a non-profit, non-political organisation originally set up in 1920 to promote the settling of English speaking people into South Africa, but has evolved into an Association which promotes the best in British language, education, culture and heritage. The KZN Branch of the 1820s extended its name to the “British Cultural & Heritage Association” in May 1999 to be in line with current trends to be culturally identifiable and to reflect the change in focus of the Branch - we have moved into an era where cultural differences are recognised and celebrated.

The KZN Branch has many exciting events during the course of the year, the most popular being the 'St George’s Day Celebration' in April, the 'Queen’s Official Birthday' in June, the massed 'Orchestra' concert in August and the 'Last Night of the Proms' concert in October. We also organise a number of social games mornings, outings to historical/heritage sites as well as regular socials and the Kindred Society Quiz every three months. More details of these and the many other activities are published in our Branch newsletter which is mailed to members every three months. Newsletters also include reports on past functions and useful information on a variety of relevant topics. Members enjoy discounted rates for Branch functions not to mention the fellowship and camaraderie at the interesting socials. There are opportunities for volunteering at our projects [such as the ‘Orchestra’ and Proms concerts] while simultaneously building friendships with other members. Membership fees [currently R100pa] cover the whole family [children under the age of 18] residing at the given address. There is a once-off joining fee of R50.00. Membership is open to anyone who identifies with the aims and objectives of the Association. You don’t need to be British to become an 1820’s member! Membership includes the following advantages and benefits:

· Bursaries for Tertiary Education in SA - Members, their children or grandchildren [who have been members for a minimum of two years] are eligible to apply. R10,000 per year for three years.

· Discounted courier price – passport service to the British High Commission in Pretoria. Details, bag dates, forms, photo rules, credit card slips and notes available at the office.

· Interesting Functions & Socials - Kindred Society Quiz, Pub nights and a variety of talks & excursions.

· Discounted genealogical research - by our resident genealogist at Grahamstown’s Albany Museum, William Jervois.

· Vote - Members have a vote at our Association’s Annual General Meeting and can nominate persons to serve on committees.

Passport Courier Service – A special rate courier service to the High Commission in Pretoria is now available from our office – please help spread the word to friends & family. Please phone the office to check when the next monthly bag is going up to Pretoria. Your completed documents must be in before the 'bag date' to expedite the process. Applicants to fill in their forms and the office will check them before submission to the High Commission.
